What is DVS 2024? – A breakdown

What is DVS 2024?

DVS 2024 (coming into effect 28th October 2024) is the enhancement of existing DVS legislation that came into effect in March 2021. The Direct Vision Standard (DVS) aims to improve road safety, especially for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. The enhanced DVS will look to eliminate further (front and nearside) blind spots so the driver has full coverage and visibility in those areas to avoid serious collisions and road deaths.

What is the star rating?

As it stands, to gain a DVS permit for HGVs to operate within London and the Greater London area, vehicles must have at least a 1-star rating. This will, however, increase to a minimum of 3 stars when the new enhanced DVS 2024 comes into effect.

How do I find out about my star rating?

If you operate HGVs within the designated area, you will most likely already have at least a 1-star rating to achieve compliance. To find out your DVS star rating, you can visit the TFL website and input the following information:

  • Vehicle registration number
  • Count of registration

What is the Progressive Safe System?

The ‘Progressive Safe System’ is the answer to ensure DVS 2024 compliance. Essentially, for vehicles that have a star rating of less than 3, the vehicle will need to be fitted with a ‘Progressive Safe System’ which in simple terms is a DVS 2024 kit.

What happens if I don’t comply with DVS?

If you are not operating within London or Greater London, then you are fine for now. However, if you are operating your HGVs within the designated area, then you will be fined with a penalty charge of £550 per day, which is reduced to £275 if paid within two weeks.  This will most likely increase when the new changes come into effect.
